Scarecrow for Daniel

Drawing for my brother to serve as a sort of mascot for his work. Had fun drawing him. Drew a lot of influence from a wide number of different scarecrow drawing and paintings, many of which Daniel sent to me.

Drew it on paper with pencil, which I don't do as much lately, I enjoyed that part.

Hello. I have some animations that I will be posting at some point as well. here a couple of the more recent sketches I have done. Most of these were drawn while I sat at the bar at "intelligentsia coffee" in LA. Pretty good espresso. I have a bunch others that I haven't / may never scan.

I decided to try this new blogger theme. Interesting no? I don't know how I feel about it.

How has life been for you? Mine's changed a bit since the last post.

I have been trying out some watercolors lately, here are some of them.

The first, third and fourth are smaller, done in a sketchbook with watercolor paper. and the second on a larger piece of watercolor paper.

Trying to get the feel of the color of a person is hard! So many colors, hard to choose which to focus on and still keep value in mind etc etc etc.

Charcoal! Always a good medium, Trying a a different technique on these two, just trying to combine all things I have learned and keeping my speed up at the same time.

These are longer, like, an hour. Below are shorter, around 2-5 minutes? I can't really remember. I like shorter poses, harder to get self-conscious about them.

This guy was really thin, and often wasn't quite sure how to pose. he explained it was because he was nerd. He really was, very awkward, he was interesting.

This lady was an intersting one. She kinda reminded me of that British singer... What's her name, Susan Boyle! Yeah, anyways, I had fun drawing her.

I feel like I am writing to a diary in this post. Dear Diary, I have more drawings for you, but I will send them up later. It takes to much time to upload and I need to get to other things. Love always, Jonathan

These are from figure, the day we painted each other. I have actual figures too, of naked people, but I need to find them cause I seem to have misplaced them... Oh! and these were scanned on a small scanner from big watercolor paper, so I apologize if some of them have a stitched together appearance.

And here are a couple of little doodles from my sketchbook, the landscape one is from my sister's school in Berkeley.

There were many birds about including one with a stub leg, which I can't seem to find the drawing of...

Near the end of this post, but at the beginning of the sketch day. Trying out a new pencil. haha, I just noticed all of them are other sketchcrawlers!

Also a bonus one, these are from a cafe I went to. These three were sitting around talking, they seemed very happy with themselves. I suspect they might have just come back from the opera.

Hopefully you don't notice any difference but the address in your address bar is different. I moved the blog to a new address, much simpler I think.
However, Because of the move, I lost all my followers! There weren't a ton, but they were following me, and that made me happy. So if you were a follower before (or want to be a new one) just click on the link on the right side.
Now for some pictures! Here is some old stuff that I did for a project that I was working on with Miriam. Unfortunately the client didn't go past the design stage, so these drawings are orphans. I kinda liked em, so here are a couple of the, Miriam has a bunch as well, hopefully she will post them on her blog.

We went through alllottt of different ideas for styles and looks, here are couple of them.

This is an older version of the above painting, they are similar, but I kinda liked the turkey I drew, haha.

So, I attended my first sketch crawl, and am just now getting around to scanning posting some of my drawings. It was allot of fun, I think I will try and do it again, whenever they do it again, if I can.

There was some sort of italian fair going on, that's where the princess comes from as well as the masks from a booth at said festival. The guy above, well, he was just very focused on finding the coolest possible way to sit without his shirt on. The ship below is a bit of a cheat, I drew this on treasure island a couple days later.

So school is over. Looking for a job and starting a new life. Just have to keep sketching I guess. who knows what the future will hold! I'm exited :-)
So at my sister's school, they play Quidditch apparently. A couple kids and a couple adults, some balls, brooms and pvc pipe for goals is all they need for a good afternoon match. Jolly good :-P

I was pulling together some of my stuff that I had laying around from coming up with the look and feel of my thesis and decided to throw them together real quick.
Unfortunately I'm missing many of the intermediary steps, I was trying to work quickly and would often overwrite old files and not think to save the many tests that I did. But hopefully this gives you an idea of how I went about trying to refine the style.

From left to right it pretty much goes from early source material. Early tests to see what I would want to shoot for. Then tests in Maya, seeing if i wanted to go with a slightly shaded look, with drop shadows, or if I wanted a purely surface shaded look.

A Place's sound

You know how there are songs, or bands that seem to evoke, or even define, the feeling of a place or person? Like, for me, M83's "before the dawn heals us" is Los Angeles, or at least the popularized version of Los Angeles. This, Spoon - I Summon You, is Rome. I love running across these songs, cause they are hard to find. I wonder how many others there are undiscovered...

I finally "finished" meaning I need to move on and stop working on this. lotta detail, I like how this turned out overall, kind of an experiment, would do things differently if I were to do it over, think I learned quite a bit on this.

P.S. I tried to make a sort of cut out paper look on this, sort of last minute, but I like it overall. I say that becuse its hard to see on the small version, so click for the bigger version :-P

So, I'm not totally happy with the way this came out. I had something in my head, color-wise, that never really materialized despite huge amounts of help from Miriam and Emily, thank you both a ton! Overall though, I like it, I think?

Anyways, this is a really high res image with a lot of detail i nthe background etc that gets lost, so, yeah, I dunno why I'm saying that. Enjoy readers, whomever you are! ;-)

At Jay's behest I have created this blog as a documentation of my schooling at Ringling. Does that sound official enough? I think I shall start things out with some videos of a visit to RSAD by one of my favorite artist...OF ALL TIME. Yoshitaka Amano.
